BECOME A 3D PRINTING SHOE DESIGNER

A 3D printing service can cut traditional production times down compared to a traditional cut and sew factory by offering smaller quantity production runs and less tooling costs. It takes little over a year from the time a shoe is designed to when it hits the market. In 2017, Nike created 3D printed models of the upper of a shoe exclusively with a FDM 3D printer, and called it “3D Flyprint” through a process called solid deposit modeling where thermoplastic 3D printer filament  (TPU) is uncoiled, melted then laid down layer by layer into cut and sew patterns of a shoe

Nike has pretty much dominated this part of the shoe game. Nike’s midsole dominance throughout much of the ‘90s and 2000’s has been due in part to the Nike Air team that designed the, Nike Air Force 1, Nike Air Max, Nike Zoom Air, Nike free flex grooves, Nike Lauarlon, Nike React, and Nike Vapormax and pretty much since then Adidas, and rivals like Under Armour struggled to compete with the first breakthrough of the sneaker competition won by Nike™ putting air into the midsole unit of a sneaker job well done Nike. Nike-Air-Force vs  Adidas-Ultra-Boost; The  Sneaker Midsole with Airbag Unit The airbag midsole is made by a blow molding machine, and the blow molding process. Visible air bags are put in the heel unit of a shoe using claps to hold the air bag, preventing the airbag from getting covered with the TPU Nike foam or any other foam that gets injected into the mold.

The airbag is a semi-liquid plastic bag that gets held by mold clamps while air gets injected into it. After the shoe midsole comes out of the mold it’s ready to be cleaned and painted, and bonded to the rubber sole. The first airbag in a midsole was hidden in Nike’s Air Force 1’s. The Airbag Midsole requires 3 molds: EVA Compression mold for midsole. Rubber compression mold for outer sole. Blow mold for air bag.
